Reaction Steps

A mixture of 0.66 moles of 3-nitro-4-cyclohexylphenylglyoxylate is stirred in 1.5 l. of boiling 10% sodium carbonate solution for 16 hours. The mixture is slowly filtered through charcoal into 1.1 l. of ice-cold 3 N-hydrochloric acid. The precipitate of crude material is collected on a filter, the recyrstallized from benzene to give 3-nitro-4-cyclohexylphenylglyoxylic acid.
