2-Nitro-α,α,α-trifluoro-p-tolylphenyl ether (57.0 g., 0.209 mole) is dissolved in ethanol (200 ml.) and shaken in an atmosphere of hydrogen in a Parr apparatus in the presence of platinum oxide (100 mg.) until uptake is complete. The catalyst is removed by filtration and the solvent stripped off to give 2-amino-α,α,α-trifluoro-p- tolyl phenylether (50.3 g. 99%) which is used without further purification.
