A solution of 4-(chloromethyl)benzoyl chloride (2.24 g, 11.9 mmol) in methylene chloride (25 mL) was added to a cold (0° C.) stirred suspension of 3-[(5-chloro-2-hydroxyphenyl)methyl]-5-[4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2(3H)-one (4.0 g, 10.8 mmol) and pyridine (0.96 mL, 11.9 mmol) in methylene chloride (25 mL). The reaction mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature and stirred overnight. The reaction was quenched with 1 N HCl and extracted with ethyl acetate (100 mL). The organic layer was separated and washed with sat'd NaHCO3, water, brine and then dried (MgSO4). Evaporation of the solvent gave the crude product which was recrystallized from methylene chloride/hexanes to afford the title compound as white crystals (4.8 g, 85%): mp 142-144° C.; MS m/e: 523 (MH+).
