Reaction Steps

3-Dodecylthiopropanol (3.0 g) was dissolved in 60 ml of dichloromethane and 7.66 g of carbon tetrabromide and 5.44 g of triphenylphosphine were added thereto under ice-cooling. The mixture was stirred under ice-cooling for 15 minutes. The reaction mixture was concentrated, and the residue was extracted with hexane. The extract was concentrated and purified by silica gel column chromatography using hexane as an eluent to give 3.255 g of pale yellow, oily 3-bromopropyldodecyl sulfide.
