Procedure

In this experiment, a styrene-butadiene polymer was synthesized utilizing the continuous polymerization procedure of this invention over a period of six days without any evidence of reactor fouling. A three-reactor system which consisted of a 1-gallon first reactor, a 2-gallon second reactor and a 2-gallon third reactor was utilized with the polymerization temperature being maintained at about 85° C. In the procedure used, 1,3-butadiene was charged into the first reactor at a rate of 117.55 grams per minute, n-butyl lithium was charged into the first reactor as a 0.25 M solution at a rate of 1.2769 grams per minute and TMEDA was charged into the first reactor as a 0.25 M solution at a rate of 1.2067 grams per minute. The 1,3-butadiene monomer was charged into the reactor as a 16 weight percent premix solution in hexane. The residence time in the first reactor was 0.25 hour.
