Procedure
To a mixture solution consisting of 3.7 ml (50.0 mmol) of thionyl chloride and 5.0 ml of methylene chloride was added, 2.24 g (10.0 mmol) of 2-phenyl-5-hydroxymethylimidazo[1,2-a]pyridine with small portion. The reaction mixture was stirred for one hour at room temperature, then the solvent and excess volume of thionyl chloride were distilled off under reduced pressure to leave a white solid. Toluene (20 ml) was added to the white solid, and the mixture was sufficiently blended, followed by distilling off the solvent under reduced pressure. This process was repeated twice to give 2.76 g a crude product (99.0%, white solid).
