Procedure

To a solution of 198.7 mg (1.05 mmol) 3,4-dihydro-4,4-dimethyl-7-amino-1-(2H)-naphthalenone (Compound Z) in 5.0 ml glacial acetic acid was added 180.0 mg (1.00 mmol) of ethyl 4-nitrosobenzoate. The resulting solution was stirred overnight at room temperature, and then concentrated under reduced pressure. The product was isolated from the residual oil as a red solid, by column chromatography (15% EtOAc--hexanes). 1H NMR (CDCl3): δ 8.57 (1H, d, J=2.0 Hz), 8.19 (2H, d, J=8.4 Hz), 8.07 (1H, d, J=8.0 Hz), 7.94 (2H, d, J=8.4 Hz), 7.58 (1H, d, J=8.6 Hz), 4.41 (2H, q, J=7.1 Hz), 2.79 (2H, t, J=6.6 Hz), 2.07 (2H, t, J=7.02 Hz), 1.44 (6H, s), 1.42 (3H, t, J=7.1 Hz).
