To a solution of 3-methoxy-3′-(6-(trifluoromethyl)pyridin-2-yl)biphenyl-4-ol (0.476 g, 1.38 mmol) in acetic acid (10 mL) at room temperature was added 60% nitric acid (0.12 mL, 1.52 mmol) dropwise. The resulting mixture was allowed to stir for thirty minutes then poured onto ice-water (100 mL) and the resulting precipitate was filtered off, washed with water and dried. After chromatography over silica gel (petroleum ether/ethyl acetate, 2:1), 3-methoxy-5-nitro-3′-(6-(trifluoromethyl)pyridin-2-yl)biphenyl-4-ol was obtained as a yellow solid, 0.323 g (60%).
