A mixture of quinolin-4-ol (1 eq.) in propionic acid was heated to 125° C. with stirring. Nitric acid (2.2 eq.) was added drop wise to the stirred solution while maintaining the reaction mixture temperature at 125° C. Reaction was stirred at 125° C. for 15 min. and cooled to ambient temperature. The reaction was diluted with ethanol and solid was collected by vacuum filtration. Solid was washed successively with ethanol, water and ethanol. Resulting yellow solid was heated in refluxing ethanol and filtered from hot mixture to give pure 3-nitro-quinoline-4-ol.
