Reaction Steps

16.6 g of methyl 2-hydroxyphenyl acetate are dissolved in 100 ml of methanol. 15 g of potassium carbonate and 18 g of n-butyl bromide are added. After 24 hours of refluxing followed by filtration, the solution is concentrated under reduced pressure. The oil obtained is taken up in diethyl ether and washed with NaHCO3 and H2O. Drying over sodium sulfate and removal of the solvent leaves 14.5 g (65%) of a yellow oil which can be purified by distillation.
