In 20 ml of methylene chloride is suspended 810 mg of 2-(2-chloroacetamido-4-thiazolyl)-(Z)-2-methoxycarbonylmethyloxyiminoacetic acid and under ice-cooling and stirring 602 mg of phosphorus pentachloride is added. The mixture is stirred under ice-cooling for one hour and at room temperature for 30 minutes, after which 30 ml of hexane is added under ice-cooling. The resultant crystals are recovered by filtration and washed with hexane to give 910 mg of 2-(2-chloroacetamido-4-thiazolyl)-(Z)-2-methoxycarbonylmethyloxyiminoacetyl chloride hydrochloride, m.p. 77°-80° C.
