5 g of N-[1-(S)-ethoxycarbonyl-3-phenylpropyl]-L-alanyl-N-(indan-2-yl)glycine tert-butyl ester obtained in Example 3 is dissolved in 5 ml of acetic acid, 20 ml of 25% hydrobromic acid in acetic acid is added to the solution, and the mixture is shaken for 10 minutes. The crystals which precipitate on addition of 300 ml of ethyl ether are collected by filtration to give 5 g of N-[1-(S)-ethoxycarbonyl-3-phenylpropyl]-L-alanyl-N-(indan-2-yl)glycine hydrobromide as colorless crystals melting at 180°-183° C.
