A solution of 7-fluoro-1,2,3,9-tetrahydro-4H-carbazol-4-one (1.0 g) in dry DMF (8 ml) was added dropwise to a stirred, ice-cooled suspension of pre-washed (hexane: 2×10 ml) sodium hydride (78% dispersion in oil; 175 mg) in dry DMF (5 ml) under nitrogen and stirring was continued at room temperature for 1.5 h. The solution was cooled to 0°, iodomethane (0.35 ml) was added dropwise and stirring was continued at 0° for 2 h. The suspension was poured into 8% aqueous sodium bicarbonate (30 ml) extracted with dichloromethane (2×30 ml) and the combined, dried organic extracts were evaporated and dried in vacuo at 100° for 18 h to give the title compound (1.03 g) as a solid, m.p. 174°-175°.
