To a solution of methyl 7-methyl-1-(1-methylethyl)-1H-indole-4-carboxylate (137 mg, 0.592 mmol) in ethanol (30 mL) was added 1 N sodium hydroxide (2.369 mL, 2.369 mmol). The mixture was heated at reflux for 2 h, at which time it was concentrated. The residue was dissolved in water (20 mL) and acidified by addition of 1 N HCl. The mixture was extracted with DCM (4×30 mL) and the combined extracts and washed with water and brine, dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated to give 104 mg of the title compound. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CHLOROFORM-d) δ ppm 1.55 (d, 6H), 2.82 (s, 3H), 5.11-5.28 (m, 1H), 7.00 (d, J=7.83 Hz, 1H), 7.31 (d, J=3.54 Hz, 1H), 7.44 (d, J=3.28 Hz, 1H), 7.89 (d, J=7.58 Hz, 1H). MS(ES) [M+H]+218.3.
