Reaction Steps

To an aqueous solution of NaNO2 (12.54 g, 2.0 eq) in 75 mL H2O at 0° C. was added dropwise cooled solution of methyl 4-amino-3-methylbenzoate (15 g, 1.0 eq) in HBF4(aq)(40% in water). After addition, the mixture was stirred for 15 min at ambient temperature. The precipitate was filtered, washed with ice-cold water, and dried, to give the desired product as a white solid (16 g, 90%).
