To a stirred solution of methyl 1H-indazole-5-carboxylate (6.5 g, 1.0 eq) in 200 mL MeOH was added a solution of NaOH (4.4 g, 3.0 eq) in 150 mL H2O. The mixture was refluxed for 1 h. The organic solvent was removed in vacuo, the remaining aqueous solution was washed with EtOAc, acidified with 3 N HCl to pH=5-6, and the precipitate was collected by filtration, and washed with water, to give the desired product as a yellow solid (6.2 g, 98%).
