To a solution of 9-(2-hydroxy-ethyl)-2-methyl-2,3,4,9-tetrahydro-1H-carbazole-4-carboxylic acid diethylamide (49) (250 mg, 0.8 mmol) in dichloromethane (10 mL) was added pyridine (633 mg, 8.0 mmol, 0.6 mL). The reaction was cooled to 0° C. and methanesulfonyl chloride (367 mg, 3.2 mmol, 0.2 mL) was added. The reaction was allowed to warm to room temperature overnight. The mixture was washed with 2 N HCl (2×20 mL) and water (2×20 mL), dried and concentrated in vacuo. The crude material was purified by silica gel chromatography eluting with petrol (A) and ethyl acetate (B) (0-100% B, 10 g, 34 CV, 30 mL/min) then triturated with diethyl ether to afford 250 mg (80%) of methanesulfonic acid 2-(4-diethylcarbamoyl-2-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-carbazol-9-yl)-ethyl ester as a white solid. The structure was confirmed by 13C NMR (75 MHz, CDCl3) δ 12.9, 13.0, 15.2, 22.0, 29.7, 30.2, 36.7, 36.8, 40.8, 41.6, 42.0, 67.8, 108.6, 109.5, 118.6, 119.6, 121.2, 126.4, 136.2, 136.4, 173.7.
