4,5-Dinitro-1,2-phenylenediamine (1000 mg, 5.0 mmol), 3,4-hexadione (685 mg, 6.0 mmol) and ethanol (50 mL) were mixed in a round bottom flask equipped with a condenser. The reaction mixture was refluxed overnight. The mixture was cooled down to room temperature and ethanol was removed under reduced pressure. It was then extracted with methylene chloride and the organic phase was washed with water and dried over Na2SO4. The product obtained as off-white solid (1000 mg, 72%) was purified by column chromatography.
