To 220 mL of a solution of 22.2 g of [2-methoxy-4-[(4-methylpiperazin-1-yl)methyl]phenyl]methanol in CHCl3 was added 61.8 g of manganese dioxide, and the mixture was stirred at 55° C. for 13 hours. The reaction mixture was allowed to stand to cool. After insoluble matter was filtered off, the mother liquor was concentrated to give 21.8 g of the title compound (99% yield).
