To 1.0 g of 2-methyl-4-(2-pyridylmethoxy)benzoic acid methyl ester was added 8 mL of toluene under argon atmosphere. To the mixture cooled to −78° C., 8.7 mL of a solution of diisobutylaluminium hydride (1.0 mol/L) in toluene was added dropwise. The mixture was stirred at the same temperature for 6 hours and further stirred at −35° C. for 1 hour. To the reaction mixture, a saturated aqueous Rochelle salt solution was added, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes. To this, 150 mL of diethyl ether was added, and the organic layer was separated. The obtained organic layer was dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated to give 0.83 g of the title compound (93% yield).
