Reaction Steps

A solution of diphthalimide (Step 4, 60 g), hydrazine hydrate (15 g) and ethanol (500 mL) is heated at 100° C. with stirring for 3 hours. The reaction mixture is cooled to room temperature and filtered. The solid is washed with cold ethanol. The combined filtrate is combined and concentrated under vacuum in a rotary evaporator to afford 33 g of yellow oil.
