Procedure
Monomer 52 (150 mg, 0.4 mmol) and acrylamide (1.15 g, 1.6 mmol) were dissolved in 3 mL of water and purged with nitrogen for 5 min. The radical initiator V-50 (2.5 mg) was added to the reaction mixture and the solution was heated to 60° C. for 30 min. The solution became viscous during this period. The heating was discontinued and the reaction mixture was stirred for 24 hr at room temperature. The viscous solution was poured into 50 mL of isopropanol while stirring, causing the polymer to precipitate. The polymer was collected by filtration and dried under vacuum at room temperature to give 53 as a white powder (250 mg).
