Procedure

A mixture of 23 g of [3-(4-toluoyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazol-5-yl]acetonitrile and 200 ml of 98% H2SO4 was stirred at room temperature overnight. The resulting solution was added slowly to 3000 ml of ice water with mechanical stirring to precipitate a solid. The collected solid was washed with excess water and 600 ml of cold isopropanol, and dried in vacuo to give 21 g (86%) of a solid, m.p. 169°-171°.
