Procedure

In an atmosphere of hydrogen, a mixture of 10.0 g of (1S,2S,3S)-2-benzyloxymethyl-3-methoxycarbonylmethyl-4-cyclopenten-1-ol (prepared in Reference Example 1), 60.0 mg of platinum oxide and 50 ml of diethyl ether was stirred for 2.5 hrs at room temperature. The mixture was filtered for removing platinum oxide. The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel using a mixture of cyclohexane and ethyl acetate (2:1) as eluent to give 8.55 of the title compound having the following physical characteristics, in a 85% yield.
