Reaction Steps

The solution of Step A was poured into an iced aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution and the mixture was extracted with methylene chloride. The organic phase was evaporated to dryness and the residue was chromatographed over silica gel. Elution with a 4-1 hexane-ethyl acetate mixture yielded 600 mg of methyl 4-chloro-4-methyl-3-formylpentanoate which crystallized at -20° C.
