Procedure

At room temperature, a spatula tip (about 10 mg) of crown ether (18-crown-6) and 1 ml of dimethyl sulfoxide were added to 1.65 g (3.8 mmol) of 5-bromo-3-(2-chloro-6-fluorophenyl)-2,4-dichloro-6-methylsulfonylpyridine (Example F) dissolved in 50 ml of acetonitrile, and the mixture was heated to 60° C. Over a period of 6 h, 500 mg (7.6 mmol) of potassium cyamide were then added a little at a time at this temperature. The mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight and chromatographed directly on silica gel using cyclohexane/ethyl acetate. Yield 0.57 g of a solid, m.p. 90° C. 1H-NMR (CDCl3) δ=7.18 (m); 7.40 (m).
