Procedure
A mixture of (±)-diethyl 2,2′-(3-methyl-4-nitro-2-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-indole-1,3-diyl)diacetate from Step B (2.30 g, 6.31 mmol) and Lawesson's reagent (1.53 g, 3.79 mmol) was heated at 150° C. in xylenes (120 mL) for 18 h. The reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo and the residue was purified by silica gel chromatography, eluting with a gradient of hexane:EtOAc—100:0 to 0:100, to give the title compound. MS: m/z=381 (M+1).
