7-Methoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-naphthalen-2-ol (4.48 g, from step A) is taken up in AcOH (15 mL) and cooled to 0° C. Concentrated sulfuric acid (10 drops) is added. The mixture is stirred at 0° C. for 20 min and then warmed to room temperature over 10 min. The mixture is partitioned between ice-cold 1 N NaOH and EtOAc. The organic layer is dried over MgSO4 and concentrated to afford acetic acid 7-methoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-naphthalen-2-yl ester as a red solid: 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ 7.01 (d, J=8.0 Hz, 1H), 6.71 (d, J=8.0 Hz, 1H), 6.60 (s, 1H), 5.19 (m, 1H), 3.77 (s, 3H), 3.08 (dd, J=16.0, 8.0 Hz, 1H), 2.90-2.70 (m, 3H), 2.05 (s, 3H), 2.05-1.88 (m, 2H).
