Procedure
3,4,5-Trimethoxytoluene (formula VII wherein R=H3CO, X=H, Y=H3CO) (2.09 parts) and ethyl 5-chloroformylpentanoate (2.66 parts) were treated in the same manner as Example 4. The procedure provided 5-(2'-hydroxy-3',4'-dimethoxy-6'-methylbenzoyl)pentanoic acid (formula II-1 wherein R=H3CO, X=H, Y=OH, n=4, in the free form) (1.97 part) as pale-brown needles melting at 111°-112° C.
