A solution of 4.90 g (0.009 mol) of ammonium ceric nitrate in 20 ml of water was added to a stirred solution of 1.20 g (0.0035 mol) of methyl rac-1',2',3',4'-tetrahydro-5',8'-dimethoxyspiro[1,3-dithiolane-2,4'-naphthalene]-2'-carboxylate in 100 ml of acetonitrile. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 5 minutes, then diluted with 100 ml of water and extracted with three 200 ml portions of diethyl ether. The combined diethyl ether extracts were washed with water, dried and evaporated to yield 1.23 g of crude product in the form of an orange gum. This was taken up in diethyl ether and crystallised to yield 0.90 g (82%) of methyl rac-1',2',3',4',5',8'-hexahydro-5',8'-dioxospiro-[1,3-dithiolane-2,4'-naphthalene]-2'-carboxylate in the form of a bright orange solid of melting point 140°-141° C.
