Procedure

A mixture of methyl 7-(2-phenoxyacetamido)-3-methyl-3-bromocepham-4-carboxylate (210 mg.) in acetonitrile 5 cc) and anhydrous sodium acetate (100 mg.) was heated under reflux for 6.5 hours. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure and the residue was dissolved in ethyl acetate. The solution washed with water, dried and then concentrated. The residue was crystalized from a mixture of ether and methanol to yield crystals (40 mg.) of methyl 7-(2-phenoxyacetamido)-3-methyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylate, m.p. 124°-125° C.
