Benzoyl peroxide (1 g) was added to a solution of 4-methoxyphenyl-4-methylphenyl methanone (22.6 g) and N-bromosuccinimide (17.8 g) in CCl4 (100 ml). The mixture was heated under reflux for 3.25 h, then cooled to 0°. The precipitated succinimide was filtered off, the filtrate evaporated and the residue purified by crystallisation from cyclohexane to give the title compound (8.9 g), m.p. 76°-78°.
