Procedure
A solution of 3-(S)-t-butyloxycarbonylamino-1-ethoxycarbonylmethyl-5-hydroxy-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-[1]benzazepine-2-one (previously described, 1.0 g) in acetic anhydride (20 ml) was maintained at 80° for 3 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature and the solvents removed under reduced pressure. Ether (100 ml) was added, and the resulting solution washed with water (50 ml) and dried over magnesium sulfate. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure to give 5-acetoxy-3-(S)-t-butyloxycarbonylamino-1-ethoxycarbonylmethyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-[1]benzazepin-2-one as a pale yellow oil which was used without further purification.
