Procedure

Bromine (8 g, 2.5 ml) in glacial acetic acid (10 ml) was added dropwise with vigorous stirring over 15 minutes to a mixture of ammonium thiocyanate (8 g), 2,5-dimethoxyphenol (7.7 g), and glacial acetic acid (50 ml) kept at 15°-20°. The mixture was left at room temperature for 30 minutes and then poured into water (400 ml). A solid separated which was filtered off, washed with water and dried in vacuo to give the thiocyanatophenol (7 g). RfE 0.36.
