Reaction Steps
To a stirred solution of 60 g of 8,8-dichlorobicyclo[4.2.0]oct-2-en-7-one in 500 ml of methanol under nitrogen at room temperature was added 48 ml of triethylamine over a period of 1 hour. The mixture was stirred for 30 minutes, then 90 g of ammonium chloride and 60 g of zinc-copper couple (as a powder) was added. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2.5 hours, filtered through celite and the solvent removed under reduced pressure. The residue was dissolved in ethyl acetate, washed with brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and the solvent was distilled under vacuum, giving 32 g of 6-methoxybicyclo[4.2.0]oct-2-en-7-one.
