Reaction Steps
With cooling to 0° C. and with stirring, a solution of 16.6 g (0.05 mole) of 3-[2-(methacryloxy)ethoxycarbonyl]benzenesulfonyl chloride (1b) in 50 ml of CH2Cl2 is added dropwise to a solution of 7.3 g (0.05 mole) of α-hydroxyiminobenzyl cyanide (1c) and 5.05 (0.05 mole) of triethylamine in 100 ml of methylene chloride. The reaction mixture is subsequently stirred for 18 hours at room temperature. Water is then added to the reaction mixture, and the organic phase is separated, washed with water and dried over MgSO4. The solution is concentrated by evaporation, and the oily residue is dried under high vacuum, affording 14.5 g of the title compound as a viscous colourless mass.
