Reaction Steps

23.5 g of a mixture of 2-chloromethyl-2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxymethyl)-oxirane and 2,2-bis(2,4-dichlorophenoxymethyl)-oxirane are added dropwise to a solution of 20.7 g (0.3 mole) of 1,2,4-triazole and 13.8 (0.1 mole) of potassium carbonate in 200 ml of acetone. The reaction mixture is stirred under reflux for 20 hours. It is then filtered cold and the filtrate is concentrated in vacuo. The residue is dissolved in chloroform and the solution is washed with water, dried over sodium sulphate and purified and separated by chromatography (silica gel 60 Merck). Chloroform is first used as the eluting agent. The eluate thereby obtained is concentrated by distilling off the solvent and the residue is stirred with diethyl ether. 4.8 g of 1,3-bis-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)-2-hydroxy-2-(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl-methyl)-propane (Example 5) of melting point 136° C. are obtained.
