Reaction Steps

Methoxylamine hydrochloride (2.33 g) is added to a solution of 3′-(trifluoromethy)-acetophenone (1.5 g) in ethanol (20 mL) and pyridine (2 mL). The solution is heated at reflux for 45 minutes. The reaction mixture is then cooled, concentrated under reduced pressure and partitioned between water and ethyl acetate. The aqueous layer is extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic layers are washed with saturated aqueous sodium chloride, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure to give the desired product as a colorless oil (1.61 g).
