(S)-N-[[3-[3-Fluoro-4-(4-morpholinyl)phenyl]-2-oxo-5-oxazolidinyl]methyl]-acetamide (III-A, R1=COCH8, X1=F, X2=H) (12.5 g) is suspended in 200 mL of methanol. Monoperoxyphthalic acid, magnesium salt hexahydrate (80% pure, 11.5 g) is added and the resulting suspension is stirred at 25° C. for two hours. The reaction mixture is filtered and the filtrate is concentrated to afford a light-yellow solid. This material is chromatographed on silica gel using 10% methanol (saturated with ammonia) in chloroform as eluent to afford 8.75 g of the N-oxide.
