Reaction Steps
To a stirred solution of 1.5 mL (16.5 mmol) of oxalyl chloride in 15 mL of freshly distilled dichloromethane was added dropwise 2.35 mL (33.0 mmol) of dimethyl sufoxide at −65° C. (chloroform/dry ice bath) under argon atmosphere. After 10 minutes, a solution of 6.2 gm (10.9 mmol) of 3-tert-butyldiphenylsilyloxy-17-ethylenedioxyestra-1,3,5(10)-11-ol 38 in 15 mL of dichloromethane was added dropwise, and the reaction mixture was stirred for 40 minutes at the same temperature. Then, a 12 mL (87.3 mmol) of triethylamine was added at −65° C., slowly allowed to attain room temperature, washed with saturated NH4Cl solution, water, brine, and dried (Na2SO4). Evaporation of the solvent furnished a gum, which was chromatographed (15% ethyl acetate/hexanes) to afford 5.18 g (84%) the product 39.
