10 g of 4-hydroxy-4'-(1-hydroxyethyl)biphenyl (4) obtained in Example 3 was dissolved in 20 ml of acetic anhydride. A small amount of concentrated sulfuric acid was added to the solution. The mixture was heated to 100° C. to obtain 4-acetoxy-4'-(1-hydroxyethyl)biphenyl (2) quantitatively: ##STR56## The product was recrystallized from an acetone/hexane solvent mixture.
