10 ml of acetic anhydride was charged in a flask provided with a reflux condenser and a stirrer. Then, 1 g of 4-hydroxy-4'-isopropenylbiphenyl obtained in Example 2 was added thereto and the mixture was stirred at 80° C. for 1 hr to effect the reaction. The reaction solution was poured into water and the resulting crystals were separated and recrystallized from methanol to obtain 0.72 g of 4-acetoxy-4'-isopropenylbiphenyl (53) in the form of white crystals. ##STR158##
