Reaction Steps
Sodium hydride in oil (80%, 0.045 g) was added under nitrogen to a stirred solution of N-[[3-[2-(1,3-dihydro-1,3-dioxo-2H-isoindol-2-yl)ethyl]-1H-indol-5-yl]methyl]formamide (0.5 g) in dimethylformamide (20 ml) and stirring continued for 30 min. The solution was then treated with methyl iodide (0.2 ml). After 3 h, the solution was diluted with ethyl acetate (150 ml) washed with brine (10%, 3×50 ml), dried (sodium sulphate), filtered and evaporated to dryness giving a yellow solid which was crystallised from ethyl acetate to give the title compound (0.2 g) as an off-white solid m.p. 189°-191°.
