A solution of 0.5 g of 2,6-dimethyl-3-methoxycarbonyl-4-(3-nitrophenyl)-5-[2-(4-methoxycarbonylmethoxyphenyl)ethoxycarbonyl]-1,4-dihydropyridine, 0.5 mL 10% aqueous NaOH, and 20 mL of methanol was heated on a steam bath for 20 min. The mixture was diluted with water, acidified with HCl, and extracted with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate was dried and evaporated to yield 0.40 g of 2,6-dimethyl-3-methoxycarbonyl-4-(3-nitrophenyl)-5-[2-(4-carboxymethylphenyl)ethoxycarbonyl]-1,4-dihydropyridine (1).
