A solid mixture of 13 g of 2,3-dichloro-2',4-dimethoxybenzophenone and 52 g of pyridine HCl is heated at 200° C. for one hour. The hot mixture is then poured into vigorously stirred ice water. The product is extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract is dried over Na2SO4 and evaporated to give 2,3-dichloro-2',4-dihydroxybenzophenone, mp 197°-201° C.
