Procedure
A mixture of ethyl 2-ethyl-1-[[2'-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)biphenyl-4-yl]methyl]benzimidazole-7-carboxylate (0.5 g) in methanol (10 ml) and 2N NaOH was heated under reflux for 4 hours. The reaction mixture was concentrated to dryness. The concentrate was dissolved in water, followed by neutralization with 1N-HCl to give crystals. Recrystallization from DMF-ethanol-water afforded colorless prisms (0.27 g, 58%), m.p. 261°-262° C.
