A mixture of 1 g of 1-(4-nitrobenzyl)-2-butyl-4-chloro-5-hydroxymethyl imidazole and 5 g of activated MnO2 in CH2Cl2 was stirred at room temperature for 18 hours. The reaction mixture was filtered through celite and the filtrate was concentrated to give a thick oil which was purified by flash column chromatography on silica gel (Hexane:ethyl acetate-1.5:1 elution). The desired compound was obtained as a colorless solid, 0.76 g; m.p. 88°-89°; NMR (200 MHz, CDCl3): δ 9.74 (2, 1h); 5.64 (s, 2H); 2.63 (t, 3H, J=7.4 Hz); 1.68 (m, 2H); 1.34 (m, 2H); 0.89 (t, 3H, J=7.3 Hz).
