0.14 mole (39.5 g) of 4-benzyloxy-2,3-dimethyl-7-methoxyindole and 4 g of 10% palladium-on-charcoal in 120 ml of 96° ethanol to which have been added 80 ml of cyclohexane is heated under reflux. After 1 hour 30 minutes the catalyst is removed by hot filtration. The desired product is obtained by concentrating the filtrate to dryness. It is purified by dissolving it hot in isopropyl ether, filtering in the presence of charcoal and evaporating the filtrate to dryness. It melts at 164° C.
