Reaction Steps
To a solution of 11 (1.05 g, 2.12 mmol) in 10 mL of methanol at 0°-5° C. was added dropwise aqueous NaOH (2.1 mL of 1N, 2.1 mmol). The mixture was stirred for 1 h and most of the volatiles were removed in vacuo. The residue was acidified with aqueous HCl to pH 3 and extracted with ether. The combined extracts were washed with brine and dried (MgSO4). Removal of the volatiles in vacuo gave 0.90 gm of tan colored solid.
