Sodium borohydride (1.0 g) was added portionwise over a period of 30 minutes to a stirred solution of 4-bromo-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzaldehyde (8.2 g) in methanol (80 cm3) whilst the temperature was maintained within the range from -5° C. to ±5° C., after which the mixture was stirred for 2 hours at the ambient temperature (ca 18° C.). The mixture was poured into water and the precipitated white solid collected by filtration, washed with water and air dried to yield 4-bromo-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzyl alcohol (7.5 g), mp. 60°-62° C.
